Food Support - SNAP

Now more than ever, it is important for struggling seniors and working families in our communities to know what opportunities they have when it comes to nutrition assistance. Unfortunately, many people in need are not aware of some of their options. Second Harvest North Central Food Bank has launched the SNAP Outreach Program with the addition of Aimee Love as the SNAP Outreach and Education Coordinator to our team.

The SNAP Outreach Program is designed to work with organizations in the community to help inform clients about this valuable food resource that already exists. Formerly known as the Federal Food Stamp Program (or Food Support in Minnesota), the SNAP Outreach Program increases awareness about the availability of SNAP benefits, and provides enrollment assistance to eligible individuals and families.

In Minnesota only 64% of eligible individuals take advantage of SNAP benefits, leaving a large portion of the resource unused. (See chart) It is our goal inform and educate our hunger relief partners, the general public, and government officials about this opportunity. More is needed to close the gap on Missing Meals, and better utilization of SNAP is a critical piece of the puzzle.

For new Food Support (SNAP) applications and ongoing Food Support recertifications processed on and after November 1, 2010, the following changes will be applied:
• The gross income limit will increase
• No assets will be counted

Below is the income limit for Food Support effective 11/1/2010:
Family Size – Monthly Income Before Taxes
1 – $1,490
2 – $2,004
3 – $2,518
4 – $3,032
5 – $3,547
6 – $4,061
7 – $4,575
8 – $5,089

*For each additional family member, add $515
